Hurricane Iris

On October 8, 2002 the village of Placencia was hit by a category 5 hurricane packing winds of up to130mph. This was the first hurricane to hit the peninsula in a hundred years. Most of the village was destroyed. Although no one in Placencia died, the hurricane claimed the lives of nine scuba divers aboard the Wave Dancer which overturned in Big Creek - Independence.

The sidewalk is the center of village life in Placencia. It is the hub of activity with shops, hotels, restaurants and homes lining it's 4,071 feet long and 4 feet wide - according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the smallest street in the world.
